On April 22,2012, all of our Twirly Girls and Boys came together despite a mini heat wave and a broken AC unit, everyone danced their hearts out to celebrate our Lovely Rita! The show sold out almost two weeks before the event. And, at last count, we had raised almost $3,800 to benefit the National Kidney Foundation. We want to thank everyone who contributed prizes and time to this amazing event. We are really proud to be surrounded by so many amazing and generous people!
If you missed the event, here are some videos of the show!
Our next event is Trick or Twirl in October…you better not miss it!

Note from Lori: I’m sure when Bel founded Twirly Girls, men in pole dance was so far from anyone’s mind. Just a few short years later, Twirly Girls is proud to be home to several male pole dancers. Here, we celebrate one of our Twirly Boys: Maleko Wine!
How did you find Twirly Girls?
I found TG through the Internet. I was searching for a place to work on my dancing and found Shelly and she led me to TG.
How long have you been a Twirly Girl [Boy]?
I’ve been a TG since September of last year (2011).
Did you pole dance before becoming a TG?
No, but I did do some exotic dancing.
Which class(es) do you take? Who is your instructor?
I have been enrolled in Shelly Lamb’s SLAPD class on Thursday night. I’ve also been to many of the TG clinics with the last one being the open pole clinic in March.
Which move were you most excited to nail?
That’s an easy one! Cross ankle release. And it’s really more of I “tacked” it. Not quite nailed yet.
Have you taken any workshops? Which was your favorite?
Yep. And my favorite was the Philip Deal workshop.
Do you like to dance in heels or barefoot?
Well, the heels are a bit tough on my insteps so I’d have to say barefoot.
(Note from Lori: Whoops, sorry, Maleko, maybe I need to make sure I check the questions before they go out!!)
What is your favorite song to dance to (at this moment)?
I’m keeping that one a secret for now but my second favorite is Adel’s Rolling in the Deep.
What is your guilty pleasure?
Since you added the word guilty, I’d have to say, and I know this is going to start a fire storm, stripping! I enjoy the performance and the interaction. Guess I’m an exhibitionist at heart!

How did you find Twirly Girls?
Well, I actually can’t take credit for finding TG on my own. Gina, my sister in law, shared her enthusiasm of TG and what pole dancing was about. I couldn’t help but be curious. So I attended to one of her classes that Bel was teaching, albeit, I just watched that evening, it got my curiosity going.
How long have you been a Twirly Girl?
It will be my two year anniversary in April. Time does fly.
Did you pole dance before becoming a TG?
Prior to TG, I never pole danced before.
Which class(es) do you take? Who is your instructor?
My regular class is with Bel on Saturday’s Triple Tease Mixed Class -Tricks Twirls and Transitions. Sometimes, if work permits, I do a cameo on Wednesday’s Triple Tease Mixed Class.
Which move were you most excited to nail?
There were two moves, the extended butterfly and the flying Farrah.
Have you taken any workshops? Which was your favorite?
I have taken Mackenzie’s floor move workshop, and of course, Ms. Lori’s Sassy Pants burlesque workshop. I liked them both for very different reasons - one was to learn how to slither like a snake, and the other was to learn on how to get my sexy walk on.
Do you like to dance in heels or barefoot?
I am a klutz, I dance barefoot.
What is your favorite song to dance to (at this moment)?
I don’t have a favorite song at the moment, but Prince songs get me dancing – edgy, little bit of funk, rock, and R&B.
What is your guilty pleasure?

My cartwheel mount. That thing gave me so much more trouble than any other move I’ve tried to learn.

I attended the L.A. Fitness Expo recently and I wore my “My Fitness Is Your Fantasy Shirt“, By DK Designs. I always get so many looks of HuH…as people walked by and read my shirt. You know they’re all dying to ask the question…So, What is Your Fitness!
I almost forgot I was wearing this shirt as I was busy buying new fitness equipment for Twirly Girls. A 15ft. climbing rope, new rings, and newest foam roller. As I was making my purchase one of the vendors finally asked….“I have to ask you…what is your fitness?” I pointed to to my little Twirly Girl Logo of me doing the boomerang on my shirt. His eyes got wide and he had a questionable look in his eyes…I could read his thoughts.! We’ve all seen that look before! The tiny smirk on his lips, trying to hide it as I passed him my credit card.
So I asked him…what crossed your mind when I told you my fitness is pole dancing? As usual I got the answer I normally get. I just don’t see fitness in Pole Dancing. You know…its just that its related to what a stripper does.
Golden opportunity to school this guy. As I passed him my credit card, with the picture of me on it doing my Boomerang, which he looked at longer than a minute. I went into my quick fitness spill about how related Pole is to so many other sport…Like why I’m buying this equipment today for our Twirly Tuff Classes!
After my little schooling I think he realized that Pole is a sport. I’m pretty passionate about this…plus I have had a lot of fitness background through the years, and I think he knew I wasn’t a newbie.
There are more and more companies creating Pole Certifications. Once upon a time when Crossfit first came out, there were so many negative things said about the way they trained. Now, If you walk into any gym you will see trainers using the Crossfit method. Large fitness companies have to bring in new methods of training, new classes, new ways to keep trainers interested and keep them up to date with the hottest and latest. I won’t even go into some of the goofy new classes that are being offered in the fitness world. If there is going to be $$$ made…it will become mainstream. I was introduced to a training method called Tabata’s a few years back through OneWorld Crossfit. I use the Tabata method alot…Now…there is a new certification called the Tabata Method…Just give it time and the Big Dogs are going to jump on the band wagon. I’ve gone through weights, to machines, to band, then bosu, then functional methods….its constantly changing….Soon you will see more companies offering certs with CEU’s…as a Certified Personal Trainer and Group Exercise Instructor we need a certain amount of credits to renew our certs. This is why it will explode…we need credits, and now we can get them through some of the various certifications being offered.
Give it time and Our Fitness is going to be Everyone’s Fantasy. Watch out world!
Just think…we’ve been advertising this all along….Get your shirt now!
My Fitness Is Your Fantasy!
P.S…Check out our Twirly Tuff Classes! Time to Tuffin Up! You will never get stronger unless you train for it…

I remember during the Hurricane Katrina catastrophe, my nephew who is a helicopter pilot was one of the first responders…I’ll never forget the sad agonizing look on his face when he told me about the rescue after the hurricane. He said it was crazy, and the first few hours all they focused on was saving as many, as quickly as they could. They would fly over an apartment with people screaming to be saved. As they lowered the rescue basket so many were not able to climb into the basket because they had NO strength. He had to make quick decisions to take those who could climb in, fill the helicopter with as many and as quickly as he could. Needless to say it was a horrible situation, but time was in the essence. How many more could have been saved if they only had the strength to climb into the basket. If they only had the strength to pull themselves into the rescue basket!
The all important Pull Up. Yes! being able to do a pull up is not just cool, but, it can save your life. As a personal trainer I hae always felt it was one of the most important moves anyone could accomplish. Lifting your own body weight is not easy. For most, impossible…but…we at Twirly Girls do not believe in impossible. I have seen so many do things they never thought they could accomplish. It all starts with a beginning. Are you ready to begin?
At Twirly Tuff we are working on the basic pull up. First we start with the hangs. Just hanging from a bar can be challenging. From the hangs we move on to assisted bands, or assitance from a trianer.
I’ve had some ask…”Isn’t this cheating?” Of course not…its progression. Letting your body adapt to the new stresses placed on it. Its about not quitting because you think..“oh forget it, I’ll never be able to do it”
Nothing just happens. Nothing comes easy. Nothing will ever change…if you don’t put some effort into it!
Practice just hanging. It’s working your muscles more than you realize. Its the first step.
Pull-up & Chin-up Technique. Start each rep from a dead hang with straight elbows.
One at a time…its where we all start…..

How did you find Twirly Girls?
I was in search for a different kind of work out outside of the gym and decided to Google pole fitness studios in my area. I came across the Twirly Girls website and loved how they offered a commitment free taster class. As I look back at where I was at that point in my life, there was much more that I was in search for. The authentic “me” that had been lost in the midst of being a mom, student, girlfriend and daughter was tucked away somewhere to be found and unleashed.
How long have you been a Twirly Girl?
I recently made “OTG” (Original Twirly Girl) a title given to Twirly Girls at their one year mark this past December 2011. With the love, support, encouragement and family feel at the studio it seemed like I’d been there for years!
Did you pole dance before becoming a TG?
No, but I always admired the athleticism and grace it took to pole dance.
Which class(es) do you take? Who is your instructor?
I currently take Shelly Lamb’s Advanced Pole Dance (S.L.A.P.D) class on Thursday evenings. Here I get the opportunity to get S.L.A.P.D by a pro-poler with advanced tricks and incorporated choreography. Her warm-ups kick butt and have me sweating up a storm before getting on the pole. From time to time, I love to drop in Mama Bel’s Triple T’s Class (Tricks,Twirls and Transitions) to learn and practice combination moves/ spins and simply to have fun.
Which move were you most excited to nail?
That would have to be REVERSE CATERPILLAR CLIMB!!!! Those who have had a class with me before know how disoriented I get upside down. So this was my biggest challenge that I’d overcome while practicing for the Trick or Twirl Halloween event.
Have you taken any workshops? Which was your favorite?
It was almost unreal for me to be at the center pole taking direction from NATASHA WANG!!! We were so fortunate to have her host a workshop at Twirly Girls this past December that I came for 2 days in a row. I couldn’t get enough. Not only is she a badass on the pole, but she is so sweet and down to earth. I’ve also taken an aerial silks workshop from Sarah Stolar (an amazing performer, artist and fellow TG), and look forward to Phillip Deal’s upcoming workshop this month!
Do you like to dance in heels or barefoot?
Like any other shoe I wear, it would have to depend on my mood. I like to dance to softer music barefoot. I’d strap on some heels for a more hardcore, rough feel. But you’d definitely find me barefoot on any regular day at the studio.
What is your favorite song to dance to (at this moment)?
I have 3: “Take it All” by Adele, “Closer” by Kings of Leon, “Back to Black” by Amy Winehouse.
What is your guilty pleasure?
SWEETS AND FRENCH FRIES!!!! When I speak of sweets I mean anything from cakes, pastries, cookies, chocolate, ice cream, crepes and green waffles. I also love Criss cut fries/ French fries with ketchup and ranch.
